During a time when people are turning away from joining law enforcement, the Detroit Police Department is steadily hiring, and families continue their legacy of protecting and serving the people of this city.
Last week, Detroit Police graduated 27 new police officers, including four who have family members currently serving as members of law enforcement and the Detroit Fire Department. Two of the new officers spoke about following in their families’ footsteps: Police Officer Gavin Fitzgerald and Police Officer Porsche McCoy.
Officer Fitzgerald is the son of Detroit Police Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald and retired Captain Kelly Fitzgerald.
Officer McCoy’s brother, Demarcus McCoy, is a member of the Detroit Fire Department, as well as another relative who is in the Academy and working towards becoming one of Detroit’s finest.
