Detroit, MI – Under Chief James Craig, the Detroit Police Department has put great efforts into building a strong partnership with the community it serves.
A vital key to building that bridge is reaching out to help those in need across the city, and in the past few weeks, members of the Department have given back to the people of Detroit.
COATS FOR THE HOMELESS
Over a two-week period in February, Detroit police officers handed out 500 warm winter coats to homeless individuals throughout Detroit. The coats were made by the nonprofit “Empowerment Plan,” and funded by a $62,500 donation from DTE.
“To be able to bless someone is a really cool feeling,” said Sergeant Steven Shank, who spent the day giving out coats.
Along with the warm coats, the officers also handed out critical phone numbers and information for emergency resources to those in need.
“This is a true testament to our service to the community,” said Chief James Craig. “More needs to be done, but in the meantime, we will continue to assist in any way we can.”

DONATIONS TO DURFEE ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL
Student Officers at the Detroit Police Training Academy also found a way to give back. Sergeant Terri Kennedy and the cadets of Class 2020-D worked with Mt. Charity Church to gather and donate uniforms and school supplies to students at Durfee Elementary/Middle School.
“(The Cadets) actually went above and beyond what they were suppose to give,” Sergeant Kennedy said. “It’s very important because the kids actually see police officers come in. So they know the police department does care.”
