On December 18, members of the Detroit Police Department hit the streets, wearing Santa hats and carrying loads of gifts, to spread some holiday cheer to families across the city.
Over the past few weeks, the Sergeant Santa fundraiser has been collecting toys and winter clothes at each of the Police precincts. The collected items were then wrapped and delivered to families in need, just in time for Christmas. This year, over 50 total families, spread across every precinct of Detroit, received presents from their own Police Officer “Kringles.”
The annual event, began in 2014 as a partnership between DPD’s Neighborhood Police Officers and WWJ RadioNews 950, has continued to grow every year. Additional partners assisting the Santa hat-wearing officers in 2019 included Xfinity, Crunch Fitness, Hunts Street Station, Pure Heart Foundation, and the Detroit Public Safety Foundation.
This year, the Detroit Police also received assistance from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division on Belle Isle. Earlier this December, the DNR Officers held a “Stuff the Truck” toy collection on the island during the “Holiday Stroll” event. The fundraiser helped bring in two truckloads of additional gifts for the residents of Detroit.
